the games? >> well, it's not clear that both sides know. the week after the election, president obama was asked do you have to have the higher rates or could we have deductions and credits and he said he was open to negotiations. three weeks later, after thanksgiving, he shows up and all of a sudden there's a line in the sand on rates that had come out of nowhere, so the president seems to be moving the goal posts in a deliberate effort, i don't know, to extract something, to push people over the fiscal cliff. something's going on and it's not clear because he's not where he used to be. he's quadrupled the amount of taxes he demands. he now has to have rates instead of just numbers. it's going to be interesting what he is doing but it appears he's not trying to come to any agreement. his position is one that the senate, the democratic senate, has rejected in the past. >> robert reish, 60% of americans according theo a new c news/"the washington post" poll believes they should raise taxes on those over $250,000 a year. presume b presumably president obama has seen these polls. so if th

, they insisted the election return obama to the white house and the gop return to the house requires both parties to come together in a fairground. but we know that didn't happen. i think everybody is aware, right, that it is the gerrymandering that has returned -- what they are calling middle ground is not middle ground, right? >> it isn't middle ground and there wasn't a dead locked election. they forget a couple of things number 1 that there was an election, and the people spoke and number two if you look at every survey -- i guess the second point is in this campaign there was a clear, clear outline by the president of where he stood, no secret. there had to be a continuation of the middle class tax cut, and an end of the tax cut for the very wealthy in -- in 2010 they got over 90%, the upper 1% -- 90% over that of the income growth, and the third point, the surveys show after the election all of them -- that if you ask people should there be continuation of the middle class tax cuts? yes. should there be a continuation of the tax cuts for the very wealthy? no.

seven weeks off. we will have an election and let the people decide. president obama went out in front of the american people. there was one issue, the central issue. it wasn't the war in iraq iran's nuclear possibility of iran getting nuclear weapons it wasn't peace in the middle east. it wasn't immigration reform. the number 1 was issue was president obama said very clear, we want the wealthiest two percents of americans to pay more in tax after having 12 years of a special tax break, which was only supposed to be temporary. if you say yes vote for me. mitt romney says, no, we are going to caudle, protect that top 2%. we are not going to raise their taxes. so if you say no, vote for me. that was a choice. the american people overwhelmingly, overwhelmingly, margin of 5 million, voted for president obama. john boehner is acting as if we never had an election in the first place and the election doesn't mean anything. is the senator has passed a tax break and john boehner is saying no, we will let 98% of americans pay $2,000 more in taxes. we wi

because obama clearly sees that he has a mandate out of the election on fiscal cliff issues. even though it wasn't a huge issue in the debate the white house is behaving like it has that mandate. what you have been seeing is republicans showing signs of flexibility and i am not just talking john boehner saying revenue is on the table. we have republican senators saying they will stand up to the grover norquist tax pledge. they're willing to break it which is pretty big news. we also have the influential member of congress, republican tom cole saying we have got to agree to extend the tax cut just for those people making $250,000 and below and letting the more wealthy be taxed. definitely flexibility but what you see from democrats is an unwillingness to do serious entitlement reform that would lead to reductions in spending. they want to kick the can down the road and do more of the next year with the vague promises. dennis: the think republicans will be willing to agree upfront to more tax revenue or higher tax rates as we go without a firm cap on entitlement reform? >> that is the big
